Experience the best of Arizona alone: adventure tips for solo travelers

Horseshoe Bend Selfie

As an avid explorer of Arizona, I’ve always been fascinated by the beauty and diversity that the Grand Canyon State has to offer. But there’s something unique and special about traveling alone that makes the experience even more memorable.

In September 2019, I went on a solo eight-day adventure of a lifetime and didn’t leave Arizona. Most of that long week was spent on Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona. It’s a sparsely populated region that’s light on modern conveniences such as cell phone signals or wifi.

Selfie tip: Try holding your smart phone up and to the right for flattering pics of you and the landscape around you.

Navajo Nation is the largest Native American reservation in the United States, spanning across portions of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. It is home to the Navajo people, who have a rich cultural history that dates back centuries.

In addition to discovering many amazing natural wonders and unforgettable people during my 8-day solo adventure in Navajo Nation, I learned a few things about myself. In particular, I learned I enjoy traveling by myself, according to a loosely organized agenda that allows for plenty of deviation. Even though I’m married with children and have a solid network of friends, I still embark on plenty of solo adventures.

Solo traveling requires some planning and preparation to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Here are some tips that I’ve learned from my solo travels in Arizona:

  • Research your destination: Before you embark on your solo adventure, do some research on the place you’re visiting. Look up the local customs, culture, and traditions, as well as the safety concerns, weather conditions, and transportation options.
  • Stay connected: Make sure you have a way to stay connected with your loved ones back home. This could be through a phone, email, or social media. Let them know your itinerary and check in with them regularly.
