Quick: What’s the oldest sports stadium in the United States?
If Wrigley Field in Chicago or Fenway Park in Boston came to mind, you’re getting warm. But if you want to score points with history buffs, the correct answer is Warren Ballpark in Bisbee, AZ.
Constructed in 1909, the original grandstand structure remains intact and usable today. The exterior and grounds have received some facelifts along the way. Although Warren Ballpark was first built as a baseball stadium, it has also hosted football games and other events. Currently, Bisbee High School plays its home baseball and football games at Warren.
Friends of Warren Ballpark is a Bisbee non-profit that helps keep the stadium’s history alive with the Copper City Classic fundraising effort each spring. The vintage baseball tournament showcases former big-leaguers who have played ball at Warren.
