Cool Springs Station worth going out of the way for

Everyone knows the secret to a successful rest stop is to build a modern facility with all the bells and whistles on well-traveled road. That’s why it’s a wonder that the Cool Springs Station is one of Arizona’s favorite rest stops. It’s over 15 miles from the nearest four-lane highway, the potties are “primitive” for lack of a better term, and they haven’t sold gas here for decades.

Why is Cool Springs Station so popular?

  • It’s like taking a trip in a time machine back to an era when things were simpler, and life moved a little slower.
  • The building itself is made to last with stones undoubtedly collected from the nearby landscape.
  • Nostalgic memorabilia is everywhere you look, both inside and out.
  • Photo opps abound for both the serious photographer and the eager Instagrammer.
  • It’s located on the historic Route 66 that traverses the lower latitudes of the U.S. from Chicago to Los Angeles.

In addition, you can buy refreshments or vintage Route 66 and unique Arizona souvenirs. And if your timing is right, you’ll meet Crazy Ray. He’ll gladly tell you a story, take your picture and insult you in less time than a bathroom break at most roadside stops.

Across the road from Cool Springs Station is a Mesa Trail. When temperatures are cooler, the hike to a mesa perched high above is an invigorating experience that rewards with you with unmatched views of the surrounding valley.
